About Shannon
I graduated from Teachers College, Columbia University as a K-12 Technology Specialist in 2017. Immediately upon graduating, I began tutoring with Varsity Tutors, as an in-person reading, writing and phonics tutor. My Varsity Tutors roster consisted of elementary school students, ages 4-12 years old. In September of 2018, I began working as a Substitute Teacher in elementary and high schools throughout New York City. In April of 2019, I obtained a permanent Teacher's Assistant position at the Bronx Academy of Promise.
I have been teaching in some capacity since 2002. I find that tutoring encourages a more personal relationship with students, allowing one to employ more of their own teaching style. Tutors also have the opportunity to work with a more diverse group of students.
Writing is my strong suit. Being a great writer necessitates a good command of vocabulary, grammar, sentence structure and expression. These abilities allow me to translate more than just the basics of English Language Arts.
Students of all reading and writing levels should feel confident that I will help them improve their English language skills. I utilize real world situations in my teaching, so that my lessons are focused, challenging and exciting.
I enjoy witnessing students progress because of the help that I provide them.
I have a Masters Degree in K-12 Education, as a Technology Specialist.

Upon meeting a new student, I assess the students capabilities using the sight word list for their current grade level. How well the student is able to read the sight words, as well as the number of sight words the student is familiar with gives me an idea of where the student should start learning.
