About William

Hello. My name is Rives Elliot. I have a BFA in Screenwriting from NYU Tisch and have been a freelance tutor in NYC for four years. In that time, I have helped my clients not only improve their grades (usually by one full letter), but get into college and grad school.

My focus is on helping students start and finish their written assignments, whether these are essays, reports, or short answers. I can even explain to you where the dangling participle is in the previous sentence.

To me, the joy of tutoring comes from watching my students build confidence in their abilities over time as they learn and grow.

I also enjoy getting to know my clients as I think it is very important for tutors to understand where their clients' focuses and interests lie in order to help them produce their best work.

I began freelance tutoring after graduating from NYU in 2015. Since that time, I have tutored over a dozen students, offering everything from temporary help on a particular assignment to regular, ongoing tutoring to help writing college and grad school admissions essays.

All of my clients to date came from referrals and word-of-mouth. The only reason I am now on this website is because all of my main clients have graduated!

I graduated NYU Tisch School of the Arts in 2015 with a GPA of 3.93. My BFA is in Dramatic Writing with a concentration on Screenwriting.

When working with a new student, I like to first establish what they wish to achieve through our lessons. I think it is very important to gauge a student's goals and interests in order to find a learning style that works best for them.

I have worked with students ranging from those who only wanted help with a particular assignment to those seeking regular appointments through the entirety of their high school and college careers. I have also worked with students who specifically wanted help writing essays and short responses for their college applications (including the Common App). Some students want to better understand the concepts behind good writing, while others just need help meeting a deadline. I do my best to tailor my approach in the way that best benefits the client.

I do ask that students send me their assignments before we meet so that I may familiarize myself with any related materials in order to provide more in-depth assistance. For regular clients, I attempt to read any books or written material that their classwork requires, time permitting.

I have worked with students ranging from middle school level all the way through senior year of college. I have even worked with several students applying to graduate school.

Most of my clients have been wealthy or upper middle class. However, I am not concerned with any given student's (financial/racial/cultural) background so much as their willingness to learn and apply themselves.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
I do not think a student should hesitate to ask if they need or would like extra help understanding a subject, improving their skills, or getting through their homework.

Everyone has different gifts in life as well as different interests. There is no shame in seeking help with the parts that do not come as easily or naturally to you. In fact, doing so makes for a healthier and better functioning society.
