About Joseph

I am currently a graduate student in Chinese-English translation at the Middlebury Institute in Monterey. I previously taught English reading and writing at an elementary school in Boston and have taught ESL in Beijing, China. I am a patient teacher with experience tutoring children from ages 10 onward up to college students.

My primary areas of expertise are writing, editing, grammar, and literature.

I began tutoring while I was working on my Bachelor's degree in Boston. After graduating, I worked as a tech writer at an analyst firm and then as an elementary school English teacher.

I have a Bachelor's degree in English, and I am working on a Master's degree in Chinese-English translation.

About the lesson

My process is goal-oriented. The first lessons are centered on finding what the student wants to accomplish, who their writing audience is, and setting concrete milestones to work toward. Do they students have specific assignments they need help with, or are they trying to improve their writing generally?

Then, I identify the student's strengths and weaknesses. Do they have a firm grasp of grammar? Do they need to expand their vocabulary? Do they have a strong understanding of the topic they are writing about? Once we know the problems, I can design targeted resources for students to work on in their own time.

Price varies depending on the student's needs, starting at $30 per hour.

For advanced students, I do a lot of preparation work before and after lessons (reviewing writing samples, editing, finding online resources, etc.) and the price is accordingly scaled.
