About Nicole

My name is Nicole. I am going into my seventh year of teaching, in which I have focused mainly on reading and writing. My experience as a classroom teacher has enhanced my ability to expand my knowledge of curriculum, developmental milestones, and communication with my students and families.

I try to find ways to connect the students' lives to the curriculum in order to provide opportunities for the students to relate to the various topics, and to cultivate a love for learning, as I believe loving to learn is the gateway to success. I foster children's curiosity and encourage them to question, research, and find the answers on their own while assisting when I see fit.

I have worked with children in many capacities outside of academics which include childcare, teaching early childhood, and instructing horseback riding. I believe all of my experiences help me better understand that all children have a unique set of needs, and I work to help find learning styles that work the best for each individual child.

I look forward to working with you and your child and watching them grow.

I have always wanted to be a teacher and started substitute teaching at various schools. I finally ful-filled my dream of being a classroom teacher and taught for two years in an inner-city school and then moved to an independent school.

I have always wanted to be a teacher. I graduated from an exclusive teaching program from Saint Mary's College of California and continued my education in Missouri pursuing a master's degree. I am going into my sixth year of being a classroom teacher at the elementary level and still enjoy it tremendously.

I believe getting to know a new student as a whole, not just based on their academic level is important. I use a "getting to know you" activity to help me get to know my student and for them to get to know me. Getting to know the student will help in creating lessons around reading and writing that will be more engaging once I know their interets.

I have worked with all different types of learners. I have worked with young students who are just starting to learn to read and write. I have also worked with students who are struggling to be "on grade level" and have found success in helping them become "on grade level" readers and writers. I have also worked with students who are English language learners and need some help with the language barrier. Also, I have worked with students who are "above grade level" and are looking to be challenged.

My advice would be to look for a teacher who enjoys reading and writing outside of teaching. Teachers who love their subject tend to bring an authentic excitement to the subject when teaching it. I would also encourage students to look for a teacher who they feel comfortable asking questions to and making mistakes in front of. The best way to learn is to ask lots of questions and make lots of mistakes.

A recent event that happened in my classroom that I loved was when I was teaching a new concept in grammar. There were a handful of students who were really struggling to understand the concept and I could not understand why. I tried to explain the concept in a variety of ways but still they were not understanding. Finally, I asked them to just ask me a lot of questions about the concept and eventually they understood the concept. I think success in the classroom happens when the teacher and student work together to gain a better understanding.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Some questions students should think through are:

1. What kind of learner am I? (auditory, visual, kinesthetic..)

2. What environment do I learn the best in? (very quiet, music playing, etc)

3. What are my strengths?

4. What are my weaknesses?

5. My biggest challenge when it comes to school is...

6. My favorite subject is...

7. My least favorite subject is...
