About Richard

I am currently an English teacher in the Hillsborough County Public School District (in Florida). I teach 11th and 12th grade students with disabilities (Specific Learning Disabled, EBD, Autism Spectrum, hearing impairment, etc.). I devote much of my free time to curriculum development, and often will study literature for fun. I am incredibly knowledgeable when it comes to the writing process, literature, and literary analysis, and am extraodinarily passionate about the subject as a whole. I bring energy, a positive attitude, and a large amount of background knowledge. Whatever your struggle, I am confident that I can help!

I was inspired by my English teachers in high school, and decided to pursue a degree in English literature. My passion for both education and literature grew with each year of college, until I was given a teaching position in Florida immediately upon graduating from college. I was a teacher at age 22!

I have a Bachelor's Degree in English education and have a full year of 11th and 12th grade English teaching under my belt! I work with a wide variety of students, and perform independent literature studies in preparation for pursuit of a Masters degree.

I often will take the time to both get to know my student and to understand, fully, what they need from me. Only when I am fully knowledgeable about what exactly my student needs will I take the correct steps to help.

I primarily work with students with learning disabilities and general education students. I've had students with Specific Learning Disabilities, Emotional/Behavioral Disabilities, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Hearing Impairment, and orthopedic disorders. I also have taught general education students. My students, currently, are 11th and 12th grade, but I am fully certified for students from grades 6-12!

Look for someone who is patient and will understand exactly what you need. Also, look for someone who will assist you in finding the answers, and not just give them to you straight up! A lot of the work you'll do involves searching, and there are tools that tutors can teach you that will help you in those problems. Don't just get an easy answer, find someone who will give you the tools to find those answers!

Personally, I am extremely proud of the growth my learning-disabled students exhibited at the end of this past school year. I was able to watch many of them cross the stage and graduate! I also was able to see many of my students in 11th grade who had written themselves off as failures pass my course with Bs and Cs, which was an incredible feeling!

I am also proud of the discussions that I have gotten my students to have in my classroom. They went from a group of students who hated reading to a group of students who would have lively discussions about literature!

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
What is the core of my problem? What skills need to be improved for me to be able to tackle problems like this in the future? What, specifically, do I need help with?
