About Amy

Hi, there! My name is Amy and I can't wait to meet you! I have been teaching private lessons since 2006 and have loved helping my students raise their test scores, confidence level, and overall grades. I recently became a member of the National Tutoring Association, I hold a Masters degree from National University and a Bachelors degree from Centenary University. I have taught elementary, middle and high school students in private, public, and parochial schools. I cover most standardized tests as well as basic classroom subjects. Elementary students have focused on English/Language Arts, Science, Social Studies, and Math. Middle and high school students have focused solely on English/Language Arts. ESL/TOEFL experience at the elementary through high school level is also an area in which I have experience. I have helped students successfully prepare for their TOEFL exams. I work closely with students, parents, and their teachers to assess the individual need(s) of the student, thus providing individualized lessons that target the most important areas. I utilize several different teaching methods, as there are many different learning styles. I look forward to helping you reach your goals!

I have always loved learning. As a teacher, I continue to learn. I have wanted to become a teacher from a very young age. As soon as I was allowed to work, I went into child care. There, I learned a lot about children and how they think and learn. I also worked as a camp counselor and nursery school teacher until attending college. Upon graduating college, I began teaching in public, private, and parochial schools, covering pre-school through grade 12 students.



I am a certified teacher in the state of New Jersey. I hold a bachelors and masters in English. Additionally, I have 9 years of classroom teaching experience and 11 years of tutoring experience.

The typical process for working with a new student is as follows:

A parent contacts me about their student(s). We have either an email or phone discussion about the area(s) in need of improvement. I learn more about the student during this discussion: age, grade, challenge areas to work on, and possible schedule. If parents would like to hire me, we meet either at the library or at their home (student/family's choice). For the first session, I get to know the student and assess the areas or improvement in person, so I can get an even better understanding of their particular level (ex: a current third grader reading at a 1st grade level). From there, I plan individualized lessons that focus on the improvement areas. These lessons aim to target the child's current learning level and also challenge them to rise to the next learning level. After sessions are completed, I have a brief discussion with the parent about what was covered and how their student performed. When homework is involved, we also discuss what needs to be done for the next session. 



I have worked with students as young as four, up to college-age. I have worked with students with ADHD, Cerebral Palsy, and unspecified learning delays. 



Ask questions. It may sound cliche, but there really is no silly question! Ask about a tutor's background before hiring him or her. Once hired and working together, always ask questions! Even if you think "this kinda makes sense," I don't think that "kinda" is good enough. It does have to make sense. Ask your tutor questions if you are confused about anything. Even if you think you understand it now, run it by the tutor: "So what I think it means is this..."

I am very fond of when students contact me after I've taught them. I had a high school student reach out to me and thank me for a particular writing lesson I taught. She pointed out that many of her high school classmates who were not in my class a few years prior are having some issues with writing that this particular lesson targeted. She still remembered the lesson years later and said that I should guest teach in her English class to set her classmates straight!
