About Jennifer
I began tutoring when I was a senior in high school. I had the opportunity to tutor again when I was a junior and senior in college. One of my professors asked if I'd like the opportunity to tutor reading and writing improvement skills to English as a Second Language (ESL) students and to those in the CHANCE Program: a program developed by the university to give disadvantaged students from poorer, urban areas a chance to succeed in college when they tested below collegiate level in reading or writing. I loved tutoring not only because I developed a wonderful rapport with my students but also because I felt a sense of accomplishment and fulfillment that I hadn't felt before. It was so rewarding to watch my students grasp the material better, gain confidence, and improve with every week. When they felt frustrated or discouraged or faced a setback academically, we would work through it.
After I graduated with a BA in English from Northern Illinois University, I enrolled in graduate school. I taught English composition to freshmen students and tutored grammar to English majors. After I earned my MA in English with a concentration in British and American literature from Northern Illinois University, I taught English for eight years at Kishwaukee College and even served as department coordinator for two of those eight years.
Teaching students one on one as opposed to in a classroom was always more satisfying. One-on-one instruction is more effective since it allows for individualized attention, more time, and more flexibility in teaching methods. Lessons can be customized to the individual, whether he or she learns best through hearing, writing, reading, observing, or doing.

First, I ask what the student needs help with and why he or she is seeking help. I ask the student to name his strengths and weaknesses in the subject being taught and to tell me how he or she learns best. I ask the student what grade he or she is currently earning. I ask the student about his or her study habits, and then I ask about the assignment and any related materials (textbook, story). It's also important to know if the student is having any difficulties with the instructor or learning environment. Once I know those things, we start with the tutoring session.
