About Joshua

Standard introductory college English courses typically skip over the format and formula for crafting academic essays. It is often assumed that students 'know how to write', when often faced with the daunting 'blank page'. I used to not even be able to begin writing essays until I thought I had a clever enough title - this, I would come to understand, is a mistake which tends to distract students from learning from their own questions.

I have been a teacher/tutor for over twelve years (professionally) and I will not only show students the doorway to crafting essays from beginning to end (thesis-body-conclusion), I will give over the keys which will make your essays stand out.

My teaching experiences has encompassed the healthcare industry, introductory rhetoric classes, philosophy, and research - all under the vague umbrella of "English".

Essentially, we are going to develop the skills needed to question, and in that process, we will see how writing itself is relevant to the academic community.

This is not merely going to be an outline/template for you to copy/paste information - you'll be asked to synthesize and explain why you chose the research that (hopefully) interests you.

I got a teaching assistant job during my first semester of graduate school - I graded research papers for a 100-person section. I tried to implement more of the 'teaching' aspect into this setting, but all that was expected was editing and grading based on grammar, style, formatting, and citations. The next year, I got to teach Composition and Literature - both of which challenged me more with what I was pursuing as an educator.

●                Taught three sections of Honors/Interdisciplinary Studies, 17 sections of ENGL 101: Composition, and 5 sections of Introduction to Literature to hundreds of students

●                Provided all students with foundational knowledge regarding literature coursework as well as ensuring understandings transferable to other disciplines

●                Created daily lesson plans, unit curriculum maps, and a variety of unique assessment tools so that all diverse learners executed knowledge and skills gained in a variety of meaningful ways

●                Developed a professionally empathetic classroom environment rooted in consistent collaboration and mutual respect

●                Provided exceptional advisory support and leadership when teaching and facilitated a thesis debate among students, enhancing their continuing literacy regarding rhetoric and transferable knowledge, receiving 2nd place out of three class section “teams”

●                Analyzed all assessments and utilized data collection tools strategically to determine and proactively address and student misunderstandings and/or gaps in learning before and throughout their completion of a specific course

I have a BA in English and MA in British/Irish Literature from the University of South Dakota. I also studied Shakespeare and Joyce during a semester abroad at Gonville & Caius College, Cambridge, UK.

I always ask their name (and how to pronounce it), where they are from, and something of note (as a mnemonic device) which will 'put' their face to the name.

I try to develop a rapport with new students - I use humor (professionally) in order to get students to open up and become more involved in participation.

I focus on the students' interests rather than my own - I am genuine in my pursuits of getting to know them beyond just the classroom/tutoring space.

Details

As students are my main focus (not money), the answer depends on whether or not I can maintain enough interest in my courses to make this a viable source of income.  I feel I have plenty of availability at this time, so if I am able to "make enough" for this to become a full-time opportunity, I would gladly be open to the idea of even more availability - this depends on student schedules.

Because of my experience and the professional setting involved with College-Level/Adult essays, the standard price would be $30/Hour. While this may seem high, keep in mind that I have 13 years of teaching expertise - specifically with the crafting/editing of essays.
