About Amy

Hello! I am here to assist students make the leap from frustration to success in reading and math. I have 20 years experience in education, am certified in Elementary Education grades K-6 and enjoy working with all ages of learners. I specialize in teaching reading strategies to struggling readers.

I am passionate about helping children unlock the the keys to learning. I love seeing "the light turn on" when they grasp a concept, or master a skill. My years of experience in teaching enable me to quickly hone in on a student's strengths and weaknesses and learning styles and enaable me to create individualized lesson plans that offer the scaffolding needed to reach independence in learning.

I knew at an early age that I wanted to be a teacher. After high school I enrolled in general eduation courses and began working towards my teaching degree right away.

I hold a teaching certificate in elementary education for grades K-6. I specialize in teaching struggling readers strategies to quickly decode the mystery of reading. I spent three years in specialized training as one of 30 teachers in the largest school district in the state. I teach students specific reading strategies that result in immediate improvement and engagement in reading activities.

I help students succeed in math by assessing what foundational concepts are lacking, reteaching those concepts with direct instruction, and providing guided and independent practice using strategies customized to the child's predominant learning style.

About the lesson

My process is to create a connection with the child first to develop rapport; find out his or her interests, likes and dislikes. I conduct fun, brief assessments to determine a starting point for instruction and elicit the child's opinion of his/her strengths and weaknesses. I provide frequent, positive reinforcement and appropriate teaching material that helps gain confidence and motivation to continue learning.

I have worked with students of all ages from pre-school to high school and with all levels and ability. I really enjoy helping struggling students learn the necessary tools and strategies to succeed in reading and math.
