About Jennifer

I am a graduate of Western Washington University with a BA in English. I have been a nanny, homework coach, and tutor for the last 20 years. I love working with kids and teens to realize their potential. I have worked with kids ages 4 to 18 in reading, comprehension, grammar, language arts, elementary math, pre-algebra, HSPT, and ACT & SAT English exams.

When working with kids in reading remediation, I use the Phono-Graphix and ABeCeDarian programs together and have gotten wonderful results.

I customize each session to the individual student since no one learns the same. I have worked with kids that needed a little help and encouragement, those that needed a lot of support and those with ADHD & ADD.

For online tutoring, I conduct the sessions using Zoom.

I enjoy helping students reach their potential in the class room a d see their confidence grow in subjects they struggle in.

I first worked as a tutor and teacher's aid right out of college and loved it. I then became a nanny for a family with 3 children, 2 of whom had severe ADD/ADHD, depression, and anxiety. Besides normal nanny duties, I worked with them on homework, organization, and study skills. After being a nanny, I worked at Alternative Connections, working with homeschoolers, children that needed extra help/patience, and reading remediation and comprehension. I now work with my own clients.

I have a BA in English from Western Washington University. I am currently working on my certification in Phono-Graphix, but have unofficially been trained by my old mentor Chris Madden. I have been certified in IM (Interactive Metronome).

When I start to work with a new student I want to learn what they like, how they feel they learn best, and what they need to work on. Finding out if a child learns best through visual, auditory, or physical means helps me determine the best way to work with that child.

I have worked with all kinds of students, from the age of 4 to 18. I have worked with kids that need a little extra help, have reading issues, comprehension problems, and those with ADD/ADHD. I have also worked with kids in homeschooling, high anxiety, and needing prep in HSPT, ACT & SAT reading/language sections.

I would look to see if the tutor's personality and tutoring style matches your learning style.

A recent event that made me smile has to do with an email I received from a parent. I have been working on math with a fourth-grader this past school year. His confidence in math was low and he had some trouble picking up on the concepts being taught in class. I received an email from his mom telling me that he is doing really well in math and even raising his hand in class! My smile was so big when I read that. I believe every child has it in them to succeed in their academics.
