I got started in teaching as a volunteer teacher in a village in Panama under the organization, Amigos De Las Americas. I taught Health and Hygiene practices in Spanish using the 2011 food pyramid, a PowerPoint presentation to raise dengue awareness, and long distance running with the students after class.

About the lesson

1. Assess confidence level in subject

2a. If confidence level is good, I let the student work independently with occasional guidance

2b. If confidence level is low, I will help the new student until their confidence level is above an 8 on a scale of one to ten so they can feel free to work independently

2c. If student is in denial of help, it will be very hard for me to work with them, but in this case and through personal experience, I know that this type of student is driven, but the results show differently, so all I can do is inspire a passion for the subject area in the hope that future endeavors in that topic will lead to a love for learning

Note: Confidence level is important to asses because it characterizes the type of tutoring style on my end

I have worked with students living in impoverished villages, students attending an inner city school, students living with high income families, private school students, and children with broken families.
