About Derek

As a credentialed Specialized Academic Instructor, I have years of experience providing reading intervention services for students a variety of students from students struggling with Dyslexia or Autism to neurotypical students who are struggling for one reason or another.

The program I use is based on the Orton-Gillingham method, which employs a multi-sensory approach that has been proven to help even all students, but especially students with Dyslexia.

Watching my students grow their reading skills while developing confidence in themselves is the most rewarding experience I can imagine.

As a high schooler, I spent my summers working at a camp for kids ages 6-13. I knew then that I wanted to work with younger populations in some way. By the end of high school, I was sure I wanted to be a teacher, but I wasn't sure what setting I wanted to teach in.

I decided to pursue a job as a high school English teacher, but it did not feel like the right fit for me. Near the end of my undergraduate career, I decided to pursue a higher education and become a university professor, but I discovered in graduate school that my heart was not in higher education.

After my Master's program, I enrolled in a credential program to become a Special Education teacher with the intent to teach elementary school once again.

I have been a Special Education Teacher for nearly 5 years now, and I can honestly say that I love what I do.

I am a credentialed Specialized Academic Instructor in California. During the school year, I work at a K-5 elementary school where I teach a Special Day Class (SDC) for students grades 1-3 who need a separate setting to receive full educational benefit.

The most important thing when beginning to work with a new student is getting to know them and building a rapport. I like to spend the first session talking to parents/caregivers first in private and then together with the student present as well. The more I know about an individual student's needs and interests, the better I can develop a learning plan for them specifically.

I have primarily worked with elementary (K-6) students during in my career, but I have spent some time tutoring middle and hish school students as well.

People in our society take reading for granted, but it is actually a very complicated neurological process. Make sure your tutor has a basic understanding of how all the pieces (phonics, fluency, prosody, and comprehension) work together and that they have strategies to help work through student's personal challenges.

I recently had the opportunity to tutor a fifth grader who had both Dyslexia and ADHD. He made outstanding progress over the past several months and both he and his parents have said his confidence has improved greatly as well.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
The best thing a student can do is simply be direct and honest with their personal experience with reading and spelling. Do not be ashamed or afraid to ask questions. A good teacher bases their teaching on your needs and personality, not theirs.
