I was renting renting a place in Encinitas. one morning I heard Jerry Jamming out on the driveway with his bright yellow strat, and thought that would be KOOL. I didn't know him at that point . Who knew I would be taking lessons? I retired and my wife convinced me to start lessons! Who's the first one i thought of ? The one and only JERRY McCann and I have not once looked back.
There have been times when i wanted to throw in the towel but Jerry was always there with inspiration and support during those times. I'm still at, knowing I will be great in the future.
Would I recommend him? ABSOLUTELY YES!!!
Great chemistry, Patient, damn great guitar player, Extremely knowledgeable, and his ability to tab out any song within minutes and show you the most efficient way to play it, is AMAZING!

As someone who played and sang his first musical notes at age 58, I found Jerry McCann a great instructor. Im a scientist by training and this right brain stuff does not come easily. Yet he has managed to get me playing comfortably, I know the fundamentals of music theory and I sing, poorly, but I do it. Besides being a great instructor Jerry is a great guy. I enjoy talking to him about his past experiences in the music industry, which are very extensive. He has met or has stories about most of the great musicians of the 60's and 70's from his personal experience and provided the opening act for many of them. I actually wrote 3-4 songs at his urging and now songwriting is one of my pastimes. I wrote and performed a song for my wife's 60th birthday, one for my granddaughters and even one in honor of a recent presidential candidate. None would have happened without Jerry's mentorship.

Both my sons learned from Jerry McCann when they were growing up and they continue to enjoy playing, and playing very well, to this day. They are now both up and out on their own and so one day I was thinking...why not lessons for me too? Being self taught for over 40 years, (and playing the same $#!% year after year, never really progressing to the next level), it was not a stretch to think that lessons might do me some good too. So I took the leap.

Every lesson starts with Jerry saying "well what do you want to work on today?" Nice to have an instructor who will teach me what I personally want to work on instead of what the instructor wants me to work on! Bottom-line is that we have a lot of fun, lots of laughs, and I have expert (and patient) instruction so I can continue to enjoy the instrument. You just can't go wrong with this guy.

For those aspiring to being performers (not me), Jerry has performed with many of the greats and brings that kind of experience to the table as well. He has helped me with songwriting tips and with composing my music with my lyrics which is a huge bonus for me.

It is important to select an instructor with whom you have shared values and shared musicical interests. My objective, with Jerry's instruction, was to play what I want when I hear it; both rhythm and lead. Jerry adopted this objective and stood firm. If, for example, I claimed other life priorities in my learning, Jerry quickly reminded me of my stated objectives. It's OK to not have that end point (if there is one), but it's not OK to have unresolved, conflicting objectives. Accounting for your own behavior and priorities is important and Jerry held me to it. Jerry taught me the chrystalline essentials of moveable chords and scales and in the genres that kept my interest. We translated many songs which provided a solid baseline for me to explore. From this original objective and foundation, I have subsequently added many more songs to my repertoire because of Jerry's guidance. And not just technical understanding of the chords, scales, and structures, but the notes. The notes that enable muscial feeling. Audible, unvocalized inner thoughts through my guitar. It is incredibly rewarding to hear another artists work and be enabled to translate it through your guitar. This level of instructional insight has afforded me incredible pleasure and sense of accomplishment. I learned there is no end point; there is only deeper exploration into your desire and commitment to learning. Jerry McCann clearly connects you with your goals.
