About Emily

I am a native speaker in English and Chinese, having studied the two languages for over 15 years. In addition, I have studied the Spanish language for over 6 years. Even though I am fairly new to the tutoring business, I have extensive background knowledge through hands-on cultural learning and lectures. My lessons and rates are flexible, and I will help with whatever you need, including essay editing, grammar, vocabulary, test preparation, homework assignments, etc.

I especially enjoy learning about and teaching languages because I believe they are the pathway to the future. With globalization and technology taking a lead, creating new connections are so important because it allows us to expand our worldview and learn about the multitude of customs and cultures through speaking, reading, and writing. I have come to love these languages because not only are they the top three most spoken languages in the world, they are all so vastly different that there is still so much to learn even after so many years. I truly hope I can share this passion with you.

I started teaching when I helped my little sister with her Chinese homework. When she finally figured out how to create sentences and phrases on her own, her happiness and gratitude was extremely rewarding. After that, I have decided to pursue that same response from many other clients.

I have tutored students at a public magnet high school, where we usually spent one hour going over materials they do not understand and working from there. In addition, I used to work in a retail store that allowed for a multitude of ethnically diverse customers. There, I learned to perfect my Chinese and English.

With new students, I usually take some initial time to chat about questions or concerns in order for us to work towards a common goal. Then, as we progress into working on assignments or other supplementals, I will utilize hands-on learning styles such as interactive conversations or video supplementals. This encourages the student to be interested, intrigued, and goal-oriented.

I usually work with middle school students who have just started out learning the language. I believe it is critical to establish a solid foundation before moving to more advanced topics.

When I traveled abroad to Shanghai, China, I tutored some students from grades 2-5 with their English homework. Feeling alone and isolated in such a big city, these students truly made my experience more welcome and endearing. They treated me with kindness and compassion, as if I were a friend.
