About Waleed

As someone who majored in physics in college, and took many math courses including Calculus 1 & 2, Multivariable Calculus, and Differential equations, I am well versed in mathematical techniques. I tutor for all ACT Math, GRE Math, Algebra 2, Trigonometry, and Calculus.

Most importantly, I consider myself someone who does their best to explain problems in a way that can be understood by anyone. I believe that explaining the thought process behind a problem is of much more use than showing solutions manuals, and try to guide my students and make them arrive at the solution themselves.

I majored in a very math-intensive subject in college [physics], obtained a 99th percentile score in the ACT Math section -- which speaks to my ability to tutor students who need help with standardized test math.

I believe there is something extremely gratifying about watching someone arrive at the solution to the problem they were initially struggling with, I especially enjoy witnessing students have that "aha" moment which ultimately gives them the insight that leads them to the solution.

I started with tutoring my peers in concepts which I understood but which they were struggling with. I ultimately found it to be so enjoyable that I would spend a lot of my free time tutoring at the academic center of my university, and to this day I enjoy it just as much as when I first started.

I'm a graduate student at Northwestern University in biomedical engineering, and I majored in Physics in undergrad.

About the lesson

First of all I try to get a grasp on what their needs are and the specific areas they are struggling with. After that I try to come up with a specific plan in conjunction with the student which most effectively addresses their gaps in knowledge.

In order to be able to harness the power of tutoring, the student must feel comfortable expressing/voicing their concerns and questions to the tutor. So, the advice I would give is to make sure you're comfortable with whoever you choose to work with.

A student of mine was really really struggling with regards to their confidence in their ability to do well on the GRE, since it played a large part in whether they would get accepted to their graduate program of choice, and to see them ultimately surmount that obstacle filled me with gratitude, to be able to be a part of their journey, and I'm quite fond of that experience.
