About Jake

I've been a high school math teacher for the past 3 years. I definitely have a passion for teaching others. My education includes a bachelor's degree in Finance and in Mechanical Engineering. Before I taught, I worked as an engineer designing oil field equipment. What makes me unique is that I have had jobs that apply mathematics.

I bounced from several careers before becoming a teacher. I realized I enjoyed sharing knowledge with others, so when the opportunity came I entered the education field.

I teach algebra 1 to 9th graders. I have a bachelor's degree in Finance and Mechanical Engineering. I am certified to teach in the state of Texas.

I think making personal connections is vital before jumping into subject matter. Questions like "What do you enjoy doing outside of school?" or "Do you have any pets?" can break the ice.

After making a connection I would access the student's prior knowledge by asking conceptual questions about the subject matter (e.g., If I know my slope is negative, what does the line look like on a graph?)

When we go through the course material I tend to ask guiding questions to make the student more engaged and do more of the work. I don't like giving answers. I love when students arrive at them.

I have interacted with high school students, specifically 14-15 year olds.

Make sure you like working with the teacher, because if you don't it will make the learning more difficult.

There's this 3-act lesson by Dan Meyer on exponential growth. It's an engaging lesson because students are immediately asked if they would rather one million dollars or a penny a day, doubled for a month. The lesson is designed to keep kids engaged and by the time we reveal if their answers are correct in the third act, the kids are dying to know.
