About James

Math is hard. I know, because I recently worked my way through UCLA's Applied Math program. However, it is even harder when teachers (and tutors) rely too heavily on memorization of formulas. Math is a language, but it requires more than simple memorization of phrases and formulas. It requires INTUITION. To get through university math I had to learn that math problems can generally be solved in more than one way, and that developing intuition is a much more reliable habit in order to succeed. After all, there is only one correct answer in math, and how you get to it is up to you. This approach makes math more interesting, thoughtful, and exciting for students, as it introduces creativity to the curriculum. We are not robots! And yet this is how math is taught.

My mission as a tutor is to not only teach how to solve problems, but how to develop intuition and ENJOYMENT of math, because I believe it is the most versatile and powerful tool humanity has discovered, and the way it is taught does not do it justice.

Reasons you should hire me: 1) Kind - I will never math shame you. 2) Experienced - 99% confident I can learn and explain anything within high school level math, and most undergraduate courses (although may require some time to refamiliarize). I received a 5 on my AP Calc BC test in high school. 3) Affordable - As I am new to this website tutoring, I am starting my rates very low. However I have been tutoring for over 8 years.

I get satisfaction from helping someone understand a challenging concept. Since I've experienced rigorous math classes, I fully empathize with how frustrating the subject can be. But giving someone the inspiration to find their own inner math wizard is priceless.

About the lesson

a. Bring me an area of focus. This could be for example a textbook chapter, a set of homework problems, or any concepts which need review. Ideally a student will have already attempted a few problems beforehand.

b. I will briefly review this area to ensure that I fully understand it.

c. I will explain to the student how their textbook would have them solve the problems, in addition to how I would solve the problems. By giving these two approaches, it is possible for a student to come up with their own intuition. Imagine: two lines can span a plane, whereas one line cannot.
