About Steve

Through tutoring, mentoring and homework help, Math for Life helps improve your quantitative and reasoning skills needed to succeed in high school math and take control of your financial well-being for your entire life.

As a user of math and related reasoning skills nearly every day, I take a practical approach to learning -- what works for you.

Basic fluency in high-school math, or "numeracy," is essential in today's world -- for jobs and for understanding and taking control of your own financial well being, both short and long term. My goal and passion is to bring you one step closer to that goal with every interaction.

I have always enjoyed instructing and the challenge of simplifying complex concepts and making them accessible to others. Throughout my career, I have applied these skills to both internal and external presentations. Over the years, I have taken a number of courses in instructional techniques, including for training soccer referees. 



I majored in Economics at Williams College and am a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries. As a pension consultant for 35 years, I have used math skills nearly everyday, as well as having extensive experience in explaining complex mathematical concepts to an ordinary audience.

I start with the course material that the student has, typically from the classroom, as well as recent tests or homework to identify the areas or concepts that are causing difficulty or that need the most focus. Optionally, having a parent or guardian sit in can often be helpful in reinforcing learning or surfacing areas of uncertainty.  



All kinds, ranging from those who start out completely lost to those who just need a little confidence boost to solidify their understanding. 



Can the tutor explain things in a way that you can understand? Do you have an opportunity to see if the tutor is a good fit for you? 



It is always gratifying for a tutoring session to end with students feeling better about their ability to solve problems and more confident in their skills. I have received this reaction from  nearly every student I have tutored.

My basic rate is $75/hour of actual instruction time. Each paid hour of instruction time also includes up to 15 additional minutes of "quick question" email support, to help when you're stuck on one point.

There is no charge for the initial planning conference in advance of hiring.
