About Abigail

If you or your child are struggling with fear of math or feel overwhelmed trying to catch up with fast-moving coursework, I am here for you. For some people, math is a foreign language, and as someone who has studied language acquisition AND math, I'm here to say that it's not too late for you to learn!

I have previously worked as a SAT & PSAT teacher and a tutor for Kaplan in the Virginia area, and served as a curriculum developer, educational organizational assistant, teacher, and tutor for Franklin Yard, Inc. in the Philadelphia area.

I've been tutoring for over ten years, and while I love my new dayjob working at an academic library, I miss working directly with new learners.

I'm currently looking for new clients who are trying to keep up with beginner math, or need help reorienting themselves to math. I know that fear and anxiety come with the territory for many people, and as someone with ADHD, I also understand that learning disabilities can get in the way. I am determined to understand where you or your child is coming from in your need for tutoring, whether English is a second or third language, or whether you have unique sensory needs. Math is already scary for a lot of people, so let's make it as easy as possible.

Specific subject areas:

SAT Math (five years experience, consistent 100+ score increases over four-week period or more)

ACT Math (two years experience and resulting score increases for students)

Algebra II (two years experience raising class letter grade from D to A)

Algebra I (studied pedagogy to improve SAT tutoring)

Curriculum Development (tailor-made lesson and homework materials for every student, helped to develop Franklin Yard's official SAT math materials)

Academic Organization (available to set detailed plans with students for getting back on track with their general academic requirements, provide optional accountability, provide research-based study techniques)

I have completed Kaplan's official SAT tutor and teacher training, as well as completing my Bachelor of Arts in Linguistics and Master of Arts in American Studies.

I always provide a brief diagnostic before our first lesson to make sure we are on the same page about the student's needs (both in terms of their math level and their comfort level with math). For both standardized testing and classroom math, I recommend a period of meeting consistently for at least two months, but I am also available for flash test prep if needed. I will give the student the chance to demonstrate competence with each new concept in a variety of contexts, and continue cementing their foundations as we go.

Details

For SAT, ACT, Algebra I, and Algebra II: I currently charge $40 for a one-hour trial lesson, and $80/hour after that. I can only work on weekends and Wednesdays, and I recommend either a two-hour once-a-week lesson, or two one-hour lessons per week, depending on the date of the upcoming test.

For Organizational Assistance: I am always willing to provide advice on academic organization free of charge during lessons. However, if a student is interested ONLY in receiving organizational help, I can provide that for $50/hour.
