About Abigail

Hello! My name is Abigail Schlueter, I am a current senior at Washington State University studying Quantitative Economics with a minor in Mathematics. As someone who has been studying high level math throughout college, I understand how challenging it can be. I've had those late night study sessions and tackled those problems that seem unsolvable. For many, those challenges can be enough to completely turn them away from the subject as a whole. However, it was my love for all things math that pushed me to this point in my educational career. I want to inspire younger students to find the fun in math and encourage them to keep moving when they feel stuck.

As a tutor, I will teach kids how to proactively solve problems to ensure the material is really being learned, and not just memorized. My personal mantra in math is the proverb by William Edward Hickson, "If at first you don't succeed, try, try, try again." Speaking from personal experience, I know how frustrating it is to work through a problem and end up getting a completely wrong answer. However, that is ultimately how we learn! I want to encourage students to be unafraid of getting the first few attempts wrong, because that shows they are willing to try. I will help students work through and, most importantly, understand their mistakes until we arrive to the correct solution.

In college, I have taken courses in statistics, calculus, linear algebra, business mathematics, and in high school have taken the basics of algebra, geometry, and trigonometry. I am seeking to help middle/high school students who are struggling to get a grasp on the basics of the maths they are currently taking. I will be in Pullman for the entirety of the semester, and would feel most comfortable for myself and others doing lessons through Zoom or some other collaborative platform, however I am willing to do lessons in person if needed.

If you have a student that needs help in their math classes, please do not hesitate to reach out! I can be reached most easily on this website, Facebook, and email and I will leave that information below. I have additionally attached my LinkedIn profile for more details on my professional/educational information. Thanks, and happy learning!

The most important part about starting with a new student is taking time to understand who they are and how they best learn. Everyone has a different learning style, and it's important to be able to adapt to that to give them the best learning experience possible!

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
I think it's important for a student to ask themselves if they really think they have tried their hardest to solve the problem on their own. This means trying multiple approaches and seeing if one works better, really looking over work to detect any small errors, and consulting their class notes to see if they can find the misstep. However, I want students to know that I am always willing to help and it's important to ask any question they have.
