About Carrie

In-home and Skype tutor of SAT, ACT, HSPT, ISEE, SSAT, GRE, mathematics (geometry, algebra I and II, pre-Calculus),

English grammar and writing.

Tutoring philosophy and experience: I have been tutoring SAT/ACT and high school math, English and social studies since 1993 and I love what I do. I am self taught in math, however I passed the Texas State math content exam for grades 8-12 in 2013.

I believe that there's nothing innate about students' mathematical abilities and have watched many students improve their math skills dramatically over time. I emphasize a multiple-method approach to teaching and know that anyone can conquer any subject with good tools and practice.

About half of my students have been diagnosed with learning disabilities (mostly ADHD but also Auditory Processing Disorder and general developmental delays). My experiences with these students have helped me develop a range of teaching techniques and openness to experimentation. Student learning is ultimately my responsibility and I take it very seriously.

SAT/ACT Tutoring: I worked for Kaplan Test Prep from April 2008 to July 2011 and as a private, in home tutor since then. My students have increased their SAT scores by as many as 300 points, and their ACT scores by as many as 10 points. College entrance exams, like all standardized exams, are not measurements of intelligence. They can always be mastered; after learning to predict much of the content and structure on the ACT and SAT, student scores always increase. I focus on how test makers frame the questions rather than the content they test, per se, although filling in content gaps is important.

Over the years, I developed strong relationships with multiple families. At each home I visit throughout the week, there are children in different grade levels, with different strengths, needs, and learning styles. It has been so fulfilling to watch these students grow over the years and then to see them graduate, go to college and pursue their dreams.
