About Heidi
I am a licensed art teacher and currently teach Digital Photography at Thornton High School. I have experience working with students of all ages and am always exploring new ideas, materials, and techniques.
In addition to teaching, I have a professional painting practice of my own and consider my work as an artist just as important as my work as a teacher.
I have chosen to be a teaching artist because I am passionate about the way art brings out the human story. I love building relationships with people and nothing excites me more than seeing the unique beauty of each individual person shine through the artwork they create.
The visual arts are so important to the way we understand ourselves, others, and the world that we live in. Engaging in a creative process helps us think more deeply, causes us to develop patience, perseverence, and focus, and is an incredibly important form of communication.
When teaching art, my primary goal is to help my student develop deeper thinkng and problem solving skills while also discovering the ideas, feelings, and experiences that mean the most to them.
I have a licence in K-12 Art Education as well as an endorsement in K-6 Elementary Education. I also hold a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting and have been a working painter for ten years.

When first meeting a new student, I like to spend some time getting to know them-- their interests, passions, and reasons for pursuing lessons. Art is all about expressing personal experiences and ideas so it is important to start by tapping into the areas that will provide the most inspiration.
Once I get to know what a student's intersts are, I also seek to find out what they already know, where their strengths are, and where we can work together to help them grow in the next step.
