About the lesson

I was born and raised in Havana, Cuba. With English as my second language, my personal perspective helps me to relate to what it means to be a learner of a foreign language. I am passionate about Spanish language and Hispanic culture. My classes not only build students’ knowledge of the language but also they enhance students’ sensibility for other culture values and beliefs that in many cases are different from their own. My classes focus on teaching students how to use language according to purpose, setting, and participants. For instance: when to use informal or formal speech or how to maintain communication despite having limitations on the use of language by experimenting with different ways of saying things. My teaching method incorporates current events, role playing, poetry, short stories, Latino folk and pop culture, all through conversation-based practices, to make students confident and fluent in Spanish while gaining a love for the language.

I taught Spanish at the University of Illinois at Chicago for 5 years as a teaching assistant. Since 2012, I have been teaching Spanish at Richard Daley College, one of the City Colleges of Chicago. I have been giving lessons for 10 years. Not only I teach language but also I am experienced in assisting students with study and organizational skills.
