About Megan

I have been teaching English for 10 years. I have successfully prepared dozens of students for entrance exams including 11+, 13+ and 16+, and GCSE and 'A' Level exams. Recently my students have had offers at schools including Sevenoaks, Oxford International College, the National Mathematics and Science College, Cheltenham Ladies College and Oundle. I have CELTA and PTLLS teaching qualifications and have taught a wide range of ages and levels. I have had my nose in a book from as early as I can remember and it helped me to get extremely good at passing exams and at academic and creative writing. I achieved one of the top 5 marks in the country when I did GCSE English Literature. I got a First in my English with Philosophy Degree. These are skills that I work hard to teach my students. I also have many years' experience in tutoring and teaching English as a Foreign Language, and usually focus on IELTs.

About the lesson

I teach because I really love English and I love to share that and inspire students. I also love to help my students reach their goals - often these are life changing, such as entering the school of their dreams. I am patient, understanding, and committed to supporting my students to improve, whatever their current level. For 11+ and other entrance exams, I offer a thorough preparation. For Years 3 and 4 the focus is heavily on developing reading and writing skills. For Year 5 we focus more on exam preparation including exam familiarisation and techniques for the papers in the student's target school/s, and interview preparation. We start with an initial assessment and assess regularly to measure progress. As the parent you can expect regular, realistic and timely feedback and school choice advice. I run a free weekly book club for 9-12 year olds to help with exam preparation. Spaces are limited and my eligible students are automatically given access. I aim to empower students to uncover their creativity and their own approach to reading English texts and to creative writing. I have seen many of my past students flourish through this approach, and become inspired to pursue the subject for its own sake. This has meant that they independently take up more reading, more creative writing, even submitting to competitions etc in their own time. They gain in the confidence to approach a text from their own unique perspective and how it relates to them, assured that they have acquired a mastery of the tools needed to analyse and understand it. Of course this improved ability and confidence leads to a greater love for the subject. It is a joy to develop and hone the vital life skills of reading and writing, which are really a key to a lifetime of learning, self development and success in whatever we choose to do in life. I teach online and face to face. I have developed a range of effective online teaching techniques due to an increased demand. My lessons are always about meeting the student where they are, inspiring them and allowing for maximum interaction with the text or material in question.
