About Dylan

Hi!
My name is Dylan, I am a third-year student studying a Bachelor of Educaton (R-7) & Bachelor of Arts (European History Major & Australian Studies Minor) at Flinders University. My hands-on educational experience comes primarily from placements within several primary schools, as well as some casual tutoring of family members and friends of family.

Although my studies focus me primarily in the realm of teaching primary-school-aged children, I have developed the skills required of a university student in regards to essay writing, summary writing, oration and research; these skills, coupled with my understanding of relevant pedagogical practices, could be transferred to the teaching of older students quite easily.

My teaching methodology will differ depending on the age and prior knowledge of the students I am engaging with. I believe it is important to determine the Zone of Proximal Development (where they are at, basically) of the child before determining the best course of action to properly scaffold a learning approach and lesson plan.

Therefore, I will use the first lesson (free of charge) to get to know the child in an educational and personal sense. By looking over the students current school work in the tutoring subject and asking probing questions, I can determine where the student is in regards to their ZPD and refer this back to both my knowledge and the Australian Curriculum to determine how best they would be helped to achieve subject mastery.

Once I know where to best concentrate my tutoring, I can begin to develop a plan that I feel will best help the child attain their desired goals while also helping them develop the skills needed to engage in further learning to the best of their abilities. Some of the things I consider to be of vital importance in my methodology are,

-Student agency: Yes, as a tutor I am expected to impart knowledge of a certain subject as my primary goal, but there is little point in just trying to drum this knowledge into a child's head through a process of repetition and rote learning. This may have been the approach used when many parents - myself included - were attending school, but there is no denying that intrinsic motivation is the best way to promote real learning. There are many ways to promote intrinsic motivation with the best way being through interest-based learning.

- Interest-based learning: Every child has a diverse, deep set of interests that can be utilised in creating lessons for any subject. Using this method of differentiation, any solid lesson plan can be adapted from child to child to achieved maximum learning potential. By getting to know the child, I can begin to adapt my lessons to include elements of their interests in many different ways. (You are welcome to contact me for an example based on an interest of your choice!)

-Scaffolding: Scaffolding is the concept that children learn best when learning is centered around their prior understanding and is provided in such a way as to allow students the ability to grasp new concepts with the aid of an educator, rather than through the direct instruction of an educator. This may be through providing visual methods of learning, or by allowing the child to talk their way through a problem and providing helpful hints as a guide. The educator should ask questions that will allow steer the child toward their own understanding, rather than statements that override this agency.

My teaching methodology is focused on the understanding that all children, regardless of age, race, or creed are individual and require an individual approach to achieve their full potential. Although I will use the Australian Curriculum as a guide to determining the best course of action in improving results if this is the primary goal of the family, I will always differentiate my approach after getting to know the child or young-person.
