About Dr Karis

BIOGRAPHY
I am a Medieval and Renaissance literary historian. I have a BA in Philosophy (cum laude), a doctorate in English Literature, a master's in Classics from the University of Oxford, for which I was awarded the top distinction in my year, and recently held an AHRC-funded postdoc on the History Faculty at the University of Cambridge to explore how cultures remembered and forgot the European religious reformations in the early modern period. My interdisciplinary academic background and training means I am competent to teach at the crossroads of a number of disciplines. An American and British citizen, I have academic and cultural experience on both sides of the Atlantic. As a teenager I also lived a few years in Sofia, Bulgaria, attending an exceptional school in Eastern Europe that offered the IB Diploma.

TEACHING BACKGROUND
I have tutoring experience in 11+ CE exams to A-Level in English Literature and Classics. I have also been employed by two different universities to teach first-year undergraduates in Philosophy and finalists in Renaissance Literature.

Degree Certificates (BA, PhD, MA) and a full Enhanced DBS Certificate can be viewed upon request.

DO YOU BELONG TO ANY PROFESSIONAL PRIVATE AGENCIES?
Yes, I have been interviewed and accepted on the basis of a private mock tutorial with three of the top agencies listed in 'The Good School's Guide' (Tutor Agency Reviews):

Wentworth Education
Griffin&Bell
Athena Tuition

SUCCESS STORIES
My 11+ student passed her English Literature CE exam and was accepted into her target school after 8 weeks of lessons.

One of my undergraduate students in the Renaissance Literature seminar that I taught so enjoyed the environment that she sensed further education was right for her. She applied and was accepted to the University of Durham’s MA in Medieval and Renaissance Literature with her final-year thesis that she wrote for my class.

DO YOU HAVE A PERSONAL MESSAGE FOR STUDENTS?
Everyone should be enthusiastic about pursuing knowledge. I'm convinced that enjoying a curriculum is the best way to mature and flourish intellectually. My teaching style reflects a combination of encouragement and challenge. Understanding a subject takes hard work and discipline, but the process does not need to be stressful or boring.

With first-hand experience both at the undergraduate and graduate levels of the Oxbridge tutorial system, I realise how an inspiring, patient, and generous tutor makes all the difference between success and discouragement. I know what it is like to have an astute expert give feedback about weak spots, help outline a curriculum, prioritise books on a reading list, and balance study with leisure and other commitments. As a past faculty member at the University of Cambridge, I am aware of what admissions boards are looking for in applications and can help students present their strengths and achievements in the best possible light.

WHAT IS YOUR TEACHING PHILOSOPHY?
My teaching philosophy is twofold. First, we learn in order to see reality as it is. Second, learning happens best through delight and wonder. I find many students lose their sense of excitement because they become destination-focused and grade-orientated. The best thinking and ideas develop through joy, and not by aiming at a certain mark or geographic location, which often leads to paralysis and anxiety. The rise of mental health awareness in schools across the UK makes alternative methods for motivation vital and necessary to our younger generation’s long-term flourishing. What is the good of getting into the school of one’s dreams if the pressure becomes too much? How can we inspire resilience in our students in the lead up to university? This is another dimension of what I offer.

WHERE DO YOU TEACH?
I live in NW London, UK. I am happy to have students in my home or travel to students' homes (within a reasonable distance). I can also meet pupils in coffee shops or libraries as preferred. If you would like to arrange via Skype or FaceTime, I drop the small travel fee.

WHEN ARE YOU AVAILABLE?
I have a flexible schedule outside of research and can meet your student after school in the early evenings, on weekends, and on school holidays. I also hold week-long intensives for students during school holidays, where I travel to your home and hold 4-5 hour long sessions (as preferred).

HOW MUCH DO YOU CHARGE?
The first lesson is half price to give your family time to consider whether I can meet your child's needs. Private tuition is all about finding the right fit, and I want your student to succeed. I use the first lesson to build a relationship with the student and identify problem areas (we can discuss what you think your pupil's needs are ahead of time).

After the first lesson, all levels are the flat rate of £75/hour in person or online.

Cancellation fee at the lesson rate for a cancellation with less than 24-hour notice.

DO YOU HAVE ANY SPECIAL DEALS?
Yes, I offer a reduced price of £100 for sessions lasting 1.5 hours. I find that 90-minute lessons work very well. They enhance concentration span, allow for more in-depth study, and give the student time to relax into conversation and ask more questions.
