About Sherry
I am a former teacher with experience working with a variety of age groups, but I especially enjoy tutoring elementary and middle school students. In the past, I have worked in the New York City Department of Education as a speech teacher, and I have worked one-on-one with many New York public school students to help them catch up, improve their grades, or get ahead.
I tutor a diverse range of subjects, and I find that I especially enjoy tutoring math, language arts, reading, and writing at all levels. I am highly familiar with the Common Core and NYS math and ELA end-of-year state exams, and I will tailor my tutoring to these standards if so desired by the family.

I specialize in tutoring elementary and middle school students in ELA and math.
A typical ELA tutoring session consists of a focus (e.g., setting/characters, themes, conflict, supporting evidence, etc.), a reading passage matched to your child's reading level, and questions and writing practice to assess reading comprehension, understanding of the focus, higher-level critical thinking, and other specific skills I may be working on with your child. We may also adapt this structure to focus more on particular trouble areas, such as phonics and decoding, fluent reading, or vocabulary.
A typical math tutoring session consists of several math objectives (e.g., multiplying fractions, solving ratio word problems, long division, etc.), each of which I model and break down step by step during the tutoring session, followed by guided practice and finally independent practice. To supplement the tutoring sessions, I assign small homework assignments after each lesson.
I believe in creating clear, detailed lesson plans that include objectives, standards, teaching methods, and assessment methods. However, I am also well-versed in the practice of adapting lesson plans to fit the specific needs of your child on any given day. My teaching style is both patient and enthusiastic, and I aim to keep students focused on the material by keeping them interested and engaged in the session.
