About Erik

Online only · Moscow time (UTC+3) · lessons in English or Russian

My name is Erik Markovskii. Frame drums are my deepest specialization: I studied with Glen Velez, Zohar Fresco and Andrey Tanzu, among other masters, and I've been teaching for more than 15 years — over 1,000 students so far.

A note for bodhrán players: I teach hand-played frame drum technique. It works on a bodhrán too, but I don't teach the traditional Irish style.

I'm an educator by training, with a degree in psychology and education, and a composer: my theater music was nominated for the Golden Mask, Russia's national theater award, for Best Composer.

About the lesson

Who it's for:
• Beginners who have never held a frame drum
• Drummers and percussionists adding frame drums to their playing
• Singers and dancers who want to accompany themselves

What we work on:
• Basic strokes and sound control: bass, open and closed tones
• Finger technique, rolls and snaps on bendir, tar and riq
• Daf technique
• Rhythms of Middle Eastern, Persian, Turkish and Central Asian music, odd meters included
• Playing along with music, accompanying and improvising

Format: individual 60-minute lessons on Zoom. I'll help you choose your first drum if you need one.

Free first lesson — 30 minutes. We'll play together, and you'll leave with exercises you can practice on your own.
