About Alice

Hello!

I'm Alice, and I'm really excited to be your English tutor.

As a qualified teacher, I love working with young people and helping them to achieve their goals. I really want to support you to do your very best in English!

I'm really passionate about my subject, but I realise many people can feel daunted by English class at school. (Trust me - I felt that way about Maths!) I am always understanding, patient, friendly and supportive.

I think tutoring sessions don't ever have to be boring, so I always try to make them as fun as possible, whilst getting you to where you need to be! Whether it's folio editing, textual analysis, critical essay writing or close-reading, I am ready and eager to help.

About the lesson

I'm a fully qualified English teacher (PGDE, Edinburgh University 2020) with experience teaching in a high school in Midlothian. I'm registered with General Teaching Council for Scotland, and have an up to date PVG. I also have a first class Honours Degree in English Literature from The University of Glasgow.

I'm well versed in the Scottish Curriculum, from S1-S6. Having taught through the pandemic, I'm well aware of the challenges pupils are currently facing. I also do plenty of one to one tutoring, so I am experienced in helping pupils to meet their own individual goals and provide sessions specifically tailored to their exact needs.

A typical first lesson

-I'll consult with the student (and parent if they wish) about where the areas for improvement are and together we will work out a personalized plan
-I'll get to know the student better in order to understand their preferred learning styles (visual, auditory, kinetic, reading/writing)

Going forward
-Lessons will vary depending on the needs and learning preferences of the student, but all lessons will be informed by SQA curricular requirements
-Techniques may include: intensive past paper work, making flashcards/posters, close-reading work...but it really varies from student to student. No two people learn in exactly the same way and my teaching style reflects that!

I offer tutoring sessions for Nat 4, Nat 5, Higher and Advanced Higher. Additionally, I offer sessions for S1-S3 pupils who would like to improve their skills in the core areas of Reading/Writing/Speaking/Listening.
