About Nicholas
Hello! I'm Nick (Nicholas is my in-trouble name), a tutor who thrives on curiosity and a relentless drive to explore a myriad of subjects, all thanks to my adventurous ADHD mind. My academic and personal journey has been anything but linear, marked by a B.S. in Economics and Environmental Studies from UCSC and a striking 42 on my IB Diploma, with higher-level focuses that highlight my passion for English, Economics, and Geography. My early education unfolded at the American International School of Mozambique, setting the stage for a life rich in diverse experiences across continents.
ADHD has gifted me with an insatiable curiosity and the ability to dive deeply into various fields of interest. This has not only shaped my understanding of the world but also my teaching style. My fascination with Roman history allows me to bring the past to life in vivid detail, connecting ancient events and figures to the present in unexpected ways. Similarly, my passion for environmental science and biology fuels engaging discussions that are both informative and relevant, highlighting the interconnectedness of our planet's ecosystems.
But my interests don't stop at history and science. As a pianist with 17 years of experience, I've cultivated a discipline and an appreciation for the arts that parallel my academic pursuits. Whether I'm unraveling the complexities of a Bach fugue or exploring the improvisational freedom of jazz, I bring the same enthusiasm and depth of understanding to my music as I do to my studies.
In our sessions, expect a dynamic blend of topics, from the strategic intricacies of chess (I'm a 2200-rated player, by the way) to the ecological nuances of environmental science, the pivotal moments of Roman history, and the expressive power of piano music. My goal is to create a learning environment where ADHD isn't just accommodated but celebrated as a source of creativity and unique insights.
So, if you're looking for a tutor who can guide you through the complexities of your studies with the same fervor they bring to their own diverse interests, you're in the right place. Let's embark on a journey of discovery together, where learning is not just about memorizing facts but about connecting with the world in profound and meaningful ways.

My tutoring sessions are characterized by a dynamic, engaging atmosphere that captures the spirit of exploration and curiosity. Understanding the challenges and advantages of ADHD, I create a supportive environment that encourages active participation and embraces diverse thinking styles. My approach incorporates storytelling, practical examples, and interactive discussions to demystify complex topics, making them accessible and interesting. For subjects like piano and chess, I incorporate games and challenges that resonate with younger learners, making learning feel more like discovery than work.
A typical lesson my look something like...
Warm-Up (5 minutes): Start with a fun, related warm-up activity to get the brain engaged and focused.
Introduction of Concept (10 minutes): Introduce the day's topic in an interactive manner, connecting it to something relevant or of interest to the student.
Exploration and Interaction (20 minutes): Dive into the topic with discussions, questions, and multimedia resources to explore the concept thoroughly.
Hands-On Activity (20 minutes): Engage in a practical activity or exercise that reinforces the lesson, tailored to the student's level and interests.
Summary and Look Ahead (5 minutes): Recap the key points, discuss how they apply to real-world situations or other subjects, and give a preview of the next lesson.
What distinguishes me as a tutor is my enthusiastic, empathetic approach combined with a rich, interdisciplinary background. I draw on my diverse interests to create lessons that are not only educational but also deeply engaging and tailored to the interests of my students. This approach is especially effective for middle and high school students who benefit from seeing the real-world applications of what they're learning and understanding how different fields of knowledge intersect.
Primarily, my lessons are designed for middle and high school students navigating the challenges of their coursework, whether they're struggling with a specific subject, seeking to deepen their understanding, or looking for enrichment beyond the classroom. However, my doors are open to anyone—of any age—who feels that my energetic, interconnected approach to learning could help them achieve their educational goals.
