Montana worked with my first grader to increase his comprehension. She used games and texts that peaked his interest in the beginning to keep him motivated. Since his issue was passing tests in school, she did begin to use grade level texts of various genres, but continued to use games and her sense of humor to keep him engaged. His test scores increased significantly and his engagement in reading increased! He began to want to read at night rather than us reading to him. Montana also worked with him on response to text writing and showed him several strategies to help him transfer these skills into the classroom.
