About Thomas
I developed a passion for ancient languages at age 14 when I learnt that these were an important apprentice skill for budding poets and writers before the Romantic period. Without any formal teaching for these available at my state school, I taught myself first Latin, and then Greek, to a high level before being admitted to Cambridge on the strength of these. There I was one of the few instructed in the dying art of verse composition, and, after composing hundreds of original poems by means of this skill, I was so successful that I went on to win two Browne Medals for Latin ode. I believe I was the first student from a state school to attain such a prize. Now I have just finished my degree and I am in the process of joining the military, but in the interim wish to share my knowledge of these beautiful (and useful) languages.

Lessons will be based around learning how to write Latin and Greek precisely, with the aid of textbooks like Bradley's Arnold Latin Prose Composition, and will be broken down into grammatical categories so the student can master one element at a time. Composition will be interspersed with a swift introduction to original texts; the predominant focus will be on excerpts of Cicero for prose, and Ovid for poetry, adapted for level, but we can work with whatever Classical author for whom the student has a passion, or who happens to be required reading. For more advanced students I will also offer lessons on how to write various forms of Latin and Greek verse, a very rare and helpful skill in reading Classical poetry. The length of the lessons will typically be an hour, but can be modified to suit the needs of the student. These will be for any level and for any age.
