About Kirsten
I am an educator and writing coach with graduate training in History and extensive experience teaching academic writing, reading comprehension, and argumentation. My background in historical study strengthens my approach to English instruction, as I focus on clear thinking, strong evidence, and effective communication. I work with students from middle school through college on essays, literary analysis, grammar, organization, and revision. I help students understand how to develop ideas, support claims with evidence, and express themselves clearly and confidently in writing. As a tutor, I recognize that every student learns differently. I take time to understand each student’s strengths and challenges, adjust my pacing and explanations, and break complex tasks into manageable steps. Sessions are collaborative and supportive, with an emphasis on practical strategies students can use independently. My goal is to help students become stronger, more confident readers and writers, not just complete a single assignment. I tailor each lesson to the student’s level, goals, and class expectations. — Kirsten

My lessons are structured but flexible and tailored to each student’s level, goals, and learning style. I work with middle school, high school, and college students on English and writing skills, including reading comprehension, essay writing, literary analysis, grammar, and revision.
A typical lesson begins by identifying what the student is working on and what they find most challenging. We then break the task into manageable steps. This might include discussing a reading to clarify meaning and themes, strengthening a thesis or main idea, organizing an essay, or revising a draft for clarity and flow. I emphasize understanding why a piece of writing works, not just how to fix it.
For writing assignments, I guide students through the full process: brainstorming ideas, outlining, drafting, revising, and polishing. I provide clear, actionable feedback and model strategies students can use independently in future assignments. When helpful, we work through examples together before applying the skills to the student’s own work.
What sets me apart is my focus on critical thinking and communication. My background in history and academic writing allows me to help students develop strong arguments, use evidence effectively, and express ideas clearly and confidently. I adjust pacing and explanations to meet each student where they are and aim to create a supportive, low-pressure environment where questions are encouraged.
Lessons are well suited for students who want to build foundational English skills, improve confidence in writing and reading, or strengthen their performance in English classes at the middle school, high school, or college level.
