About Austin
Hi everyone! My name is Austin Frayler, and I have had the pleasure of teaching secondary English for the past 7 years. While 6 of those years have been happily spent teaching 8th Grade English, I have experience with and professional certifications for all high school grades. Some previous courses that I have taught outside of my professional career include courses on the college essay, SAT prep, state test prep, and various different mini-courses (book clubs, short story units, essay workshops, poetry, and many more). I thoroughly enjoy my profession, and have had my eyes set on it since I was a high schooler myself. Teaching students how to read and write at the secondary level has always been a dream of mine, and being fortunate enough to do exactly that every single day doesn't feel like "work" or a "job." Similar to this idea, part of my pedagogical approach is that my students also feel like they're having fun while learning. I am always researching and learning how to teach complex material while still remaining relevant and engaging; what I've found time and time again is that the real-world connection is an excellent vehicle to reach that goal. I make every effort to teach students not just the skills they need to graduate, but how to apply those skills in life and beyond to help them succeed in their desired fields. I also prioritize viewing my students as people; students cannot learn in an environment where they do not feel valued and heard. I am looking forward to hearing from you and chatting with you about you / your child's desired outcomes from my courses!

My pedagogical approach revolves around enthusiasm and engagement through a means of having fun; every single valuable skill can be taught through engaging and exciting practice. I love what I do, and I have spent years practicing and researching best practices to design and deliver fun, exciting lessons that help students walk away with the skills necessary to succeed not only in their classes, but for the rest of their lives. What sets me apart from other tutors and teachers is not only the hands-on experience I have had teaching in Blue Ribbon, International Baccalaureate schools, but the fact that I am (and always will be) a student myself. I am always researching best practices and new materials to deliver the most effective and meaningful lessons possible. A typical lesson plan will include a variety of "Do Now" check-ins, which may look like a journal entry or a verbal discussion, and present the day's learning goal in an approachable and real-world grounded way. After this check-in, we'll move into reviewing the learning goal of the day, and jump into the direct instruction portion of the lesson. Once the direct instruction has concluded, we'll move into the guided instruction portion, during which we'll practice the learning goal together. Afterwards, or even for homework, depending on the type of course or session you're looking for, the independent practice will begin, with direct feedback. My lessons are for all secondary students (Grades 7-12) who are looking to improve on their English skills (reading, writing, the college essay, SAT Prep, State Test Prep, NYS Regents Prep, etc.) while having fun along the way. While I have been primarily working with 8th grade students during my professional career as a teacher, I have tutored and taught the upper high school levels in the past, and am fully comfortable and confident working with older age groups to help reach their college and career goals.
