Before becoming an English as a Second Language instructor, for I was a senor researcher for federally funded early childhood programs. On one these studies I was the Assistant Director. A day in the life of a four-year old spanned five big cities. My job was hiring field data collection and data collectors.
My avocation is teaching. I believe that education is the solution to most if not all of the world’s problems. My classes are interactive and include discussion, writing exercises, emphasis on teaching aspects of lexical bundles in research writing as well as punctuation, grammar, revision, appropriate vocabulary and the development of issues, opinions, and understanding the principles of academic writing.
In September 2014, I began teaching two sections of a course at Northeastern University called research and writing and academic research study. The majority of students were graduates of universities in China hoping to enter graduate programs. It was a challenging course for the students who had other courses and preparation for the TOEFL test. Nearly 100% of the students did pass the TOEFL and eventually enter graduate programs.
Writing is a passion of mine and I have taken many creative writing workshops. In 1989, I was nominated for a Fulbright Fellowship for an essay called “Abraham’s daughters” which was about Israeli Jewish and Arab women engaged in dialogues for co-existence. That essay was a finalist in the Massachusetts Cultural Council (MCC) non-fiction. Moreover, in 1990 a fictionalized memoir, “Venus Strabismus” also received notice as a finalist at the MCC.
Sincerely,
Paula Rhodes
