About James
A headteacher, author on teaching and learning and Director of Educational Research with over 25 years of experience. I am a published expert on what works to help you learn. I have a first-class master’s degree from the Russell Group affiliated University of Exeter specialising in language and literature. I am a contributing author to the very well-regarded book ‘A Guide to Early Years and Primary Teaching’ published by Sage, and wrote about how to use evidence to improve learning in the book ‘Getting Evidence into Education’. My first job is to accurately diagnose the areas you need help and devise a plan to support and extend your learning - adapting teaching for your needs. Where my approach is so different is that I am expert in developing metacognition and self-regulation - this not only improves your knowledge, it simultaneously improves your long-term study skills and memory for learning. As a Director of Educational Research I have trained hundreds of teachers and school leaders, with a relentless focus on using research to help learners to learn.

I am a national expert in using evidence in teaching and can offer students friendly, focused support.
11+: I have tutored hundreds of students in the 11+ and can support you with both verbal and non-verbal papers.
Writing: I use self-regulated strategy development - an evidence-based writing programme designed to support learners to become independent writers in Key Stages 2, 3 and 4.
Reading: I have published extensively on how to support students with reading. Our first lesson will focus on diagnosis and then we can work on the areas which will support you best - for example developing comprehension strategies through reciprocal reading.
Key Stage 1 and 2: support across the curriculum - as a headteacher my school was in the top 10% of schools nationally every year for 14 years in SATS.
Special Needs: I have extensive experience supporting a wide range of SEN students, including those with ADHD and dyslexia as well as working memory issues, using evidence-based programmes to support learning, for example how to improve reading fluency.
