As a library assistant, I often found myself aiding both college students and professors with research papers; from locating books and databases, to citations and providing feedback. Whenever the writing coach was unavailable, I would step in to assist students with their writing. On some days, this would involve simplifying assignment instructions so it could be digested. On others, it involved putting together a listed draft of what key components the student wanted, while cross-referencing with given guidelines.
A typical lesson plan would be me asking the student what they need assistance with, what their questions are, and what they may be looking for. Not every student comes in searching for proofreading, just as not everyone asks for advice with APA or MLA formatting. In the end, I believe it is critical to allow the student's voice to be heard; acting as guidance and giving advice that will push them in the right direction without diminishing them. With past students, I would take the time to listen to their concerns on their weak points.
