About Janelle

I graduated from McMaster University with an honors BA in Justice, Political Philosophy, and Law in 2020 and from TMU with a Master's in Criminology and Social Justice in 2025. Although these are not specifically English majors, my diverse disciplines have given me a strong knowledge on different writing styles including writing courses back in undergrad that were very strict on how to write and how to cite properly. Additionally, in my later years of university, where I discovered my passion for writing I became a teaching and grading assistant where I worked closely with professors to grade their work. I consider myself lucky enough to have worked with professors who care for their students' success in writing that they expected me to give proper feedback and assessment of a student's work as I was grading so that my students have full transparency of why they received the mark they did and how they can do better in future assignments in and outside of the specific class. Alongside grading, I have also had profs who appreciate my assignments enough to help me get some work published. As of right now I am working on two papers that will hopefully soon be published in a political philosophy and feminist philosophy journal.

A skill that I think is not always properly taught in both high school and university is how to be reflexive in writing. Reflexivity and critical thinking are important skills in writing because it allows you to consider different positions on your paper and properly address possible oppositions to your point. Another thing that is poorly taught in high school that is not reinforced in university under the expectation that high school has properly taught us is writing a good thesis, introduction, conclusion and simply, paying attention to detail. These are crucial aspects to almost every good paper and yet not all students are appropriately prepared with foundational writing before entering university. These are things that as a tutor, a grading assistant, journalist, and writer that I hope my students gain out of a lesson from me. My goal in teaching is that you not only get an exceptional grade on your paper, but hopefully you also develop skills for yourself to be a more reflexive and critical human being.

As an arts major and student who has always been passionate about the art of writing, a lesson with me will entail that a student will learn the importance of the writing process. Especially in a time where AI is taking over our ability to be reflexive and critical about our writing skills my goal is to ensure that whether or not you are a student who will use an AI chatbox or not, it is still crucial that you are critical about the work you are submitting.

With my background in philosophy, history, and criminology, my teaching will be directed to first making sure my students understand what type of paper they are writing and the typical writing, grammatical, and citation style for such paper. My students will also understand that

1. English and writing are not as strict as high school English classes often paint it to be (an essay is not always a 5 paragraph essay).

2. The importance of having a writing approach, we will share what has previously worked and has not worked, I will share my approach and we will work from there

3. There are things common among all papers such as a good thesis, introduction, conclusion. We will talk about content, clarity, organizational structure, and the style expected for each paper

4. The final and most often skipped step of the writing process is the review. I will ensure that my students know what they are looking for during the review process and how to be critical of their own position.
