About Seb

I have been teaching English since 2012. I hold a postgraduate degree from The University of Cambridge (PGCert in Teaching Creative Writing) and a CELTA (Certificate of English Language Teaching) and a Masters in Creative Writing and Education from Goldsmiths, University of London. I help students with English 11+, Common Entrance, GCSE and IELTS by encouraging reading curiosity and boosting their creative writing skills.

These lessons are also good for exposing young minds to current affairs - an important element for discursive essay writing for the GCSE Paper 2 questions and the IELTS Part 2 writing task. My students have got into schools like Clifton College, Kings School and Stowe School as well as universities such as Kings College, UCL, Oxford, Anglia Ruskin, Middlesex, UAL and London Met. In addition, my track record in helping medical graduates enter the NHS, via the IELTS route as Junior doctors who have qualified overseas, is very high.

I have helped students from Japan, China, Turkey, Spain, Greece, France, Italy, Portugal, Poland, UAE, India and Russia achieve their dreams. I am a published author of the novella Headcase - A Post-truth ghost story and have started to write my second novel, The Book of Thunder and Lightning as part of my Masters in Creative Writing and Education at Goldsmiths University of London.

  • Do you speak this language fluently because of your origins or because a teacher inspired you to learn?

I am a native speaker. I was brought up in London.
  • Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?

This is a very tough question but Charles Dickens springs to mind. He is the perfect example of a writer who lived the lives of the people he wrote about. His natural empathy (and in some cases antipathy) for his characters makes his stories so fascinating and enduring. He is the quintessential London writer.
  • Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or behaviour in the language that you particularly like?

That’s easy! The art of the discursive marker. English is such a slippery language in some ways. The grammar is fairly straightforward (compared to some other European languages), but the vocabulary is a bottomless pit. This is not least exemplified by expressions and phrases such as: however; having said that; partly; possibly; be that as may... the list is endless. The English language is a lesson in nuance and diplomacy. We can say one thing and say we meant something else with the flick of a word. It has more gears than a Formula One race car; you have to pay attention to keep up!
  • Why does speaking this language matter to you?

It’s the language of my birth and the whole world speaks it.
  • What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?

It really depends on the aims. I think if the student lives with someone from their native country that can be a barrier to progress because they end up not continuing with English speaking after the lesson has ended.

I encourage a lot of reading and graded readers can be a great way to improve confidence with English vocabulary and to learn how stories are made. However, it really depends on the level of the student. I tend to focus on B2 through to the Native Speaker level.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.

Listening (as a teacher) is more important than speaking. One thing I have noticed in my ten years of teaching is the more I enjoy the lessons the more the student enjoys them – it’s just the way it is! Also, the right group can make or break a class. If everyone is on the same page then we all progress together.

  • How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?

Prior to teaching, I was an advertising art director and creative director. I worked in The Middle East for nine years. In fact, I first started teaching English in Dubai UAE. All my classes were multi-national. While in Dubai, as well as travelling to Saudi Arabia and Lebanon, I visited Brazil, Iran, Spain, Turkey, Poland, Hungary and the Czech Republic. I’ve probably missed out on a country but that pretty much covers it!
  • What makes you a Superprof in language?

I have been teaching and tutoring since 21012. Having completed a specialized postgraduate qualification combined with extensive teaching and advertising industry experience gives me a natural edge in the education field because of my ability to effectively communicate difficult ideas and concepts in a fun, engaging, and above all student-focused way.
