My approach is centred around the curriculum and is strongly focused on past papers, so the student is fully prepared when exam season comes around. I also like to get to know the students I'm working with and keep the lessons as enjoyable as possible, so that the sessions are something that the students can look forward to.

  • 1) When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I started tutoring as my mother runs a tutoring agency. I was just starting at university and thought it would be a fun thing to do on the side. 11 years later, here we are!
  • 2) Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I teach various subjects, including English, Maths and Science (up to GCSE), reasoning, Latin, history, geography and religious studies (up to 13+). I don't have a particular topic I like to discuss with students - whatever is causing them difficulty at school really, though I'd say I specialise in the 11+ entrance exams.
  • 3) Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

I had a music teacher called Mr. Gritton at St. Paul's - he was very kind and encouraging.
  • 4) What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

Obviously knowledge of the required syllabus, but also patience, kindness and personability; it's not just understanding the material, but being able to convey it to a student.
  • 5) Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

The first thing that comes to mind is helping my younger sister after school - she used to struggle with mathematics in particular, so we'd go through her homework together. That made me realise I could potentially be a tutor.
  • 6) What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

A slight challenge is when syllabuses change (which they frequently do, especially for GCSE), but as long as you're up-to-date, it's not a real issue.
  • 7) Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

I also love music - I'm a keen singer and songwriter. I also love football, and taking my lovely poochon on walks as often as possible.
  • 8) What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P) ?

My experience gives me a lot of confidence with helping students.
