I do not have a large amount of experience, mostly my tutoring has been non-professional (assisting friends and family with exam prep) however I have taken in one private pupil who went from a borderline grade C/5 to a grade B/6 following a 1hr per week tutoring arrangement.

I work primarily up to A level for English, Religious Education/Philosophy and Ethics and History.
I have found that the best way to encourage learning and understanding is by encouraging discussion, debate and teaching back. It also helps to foater critical thinking and analysis skills.
I will give some home work but will also prepare worksheets and activities dependant on a students particular learning style, and ensure that I am fully up-to-date with any and all material that my student is working through, including texts and exam specifications/marking criteria.
