About Monica
Hi, I'm Monica! I'm an incoming freshman and Neuro major at Duke University.
I've taken many advanced STEM courses, including AP Biology, AP Chemistry, math up to Calculus II, and college-level Neuroscience. I've also chosen to strengthen my Spanish fluency through classes like Medical Spanish.
I've been tutoring since I was in eighth grade, and I joined an online volunteer group that tutored children from low-income families. Over the past 4 years, I've had the privilege of working with a diverse range of learners. While a large portion of my experience is in helping elementary school students, I also have experience helping high schoolers with upper-level coursework and ACT/SAT prep.
My goal when tutoring is to create a supportive and judgment-free space where mistakes are seen as part of the learning process.
When I'm not tutoring, you can usually find me baking or reading. I look forward to getting to know you!

Spanish
I tutor students of all ages, though my core experience is with elementary and middle schoolers. I specialize in:
* Math: up to Calculus I
* Science: General Science for younger students, AP Biology, Neuroscience
* Languages: Spanish (native speaker)
* Test prep: ACT, SAT
I create personalized lesson plans and slightly change my approach to meet each student where they're at. All first lessons include a diagnostic, as well as some personal questions, to understand what a student is struggling with and why.
Many students, especially the younger ones, have issues with confidence regarding academics. They label themselves as incapable. I work hard to ensure that students leave my lessons more confident in themselves than they began. This increases the rate of their progress by removing mental blocks.
A typical lesson begins with a review of previously-covered material, followed by breaking down new concepts into digestible steps. There are regular check-in questions to ensure the information is being understood. We finish with a guided practice (and possibly a game) that covers what they learned that day.
