About Franciscus

My name is Franciscus, 26 years old, and I am a linguist and philosopher born and raised in the Netherlands. I recently received my Master's degree in philosophy cum laude at the Catholic University of Leuven, Belgium. Earlier, I studied philosophy, linguistics and classics at the University of Leiden, Netherlands.

Born from a Dutch father and a Croatian mother, and growing up with two mother tongues, I have been fascinated with the variety and universality among languages from a very early age. My expertise as a historical linguist allows me to understand the underlying structures and historical developments of languages, and to grasp and master any (Indo-European) language within minimal time. This is also what I wish to offer as a language teacher: understanding of the underlying structures of languages and of the logic underlying its irregularities.

About the lesson

I am a linguist specialised in Indo-European historical linguistics. I can teach a wide variety of languages (Dutch, German, French, Italian, Spanish, Catalan, Croatian/Serbian/Bosnian, Latin, Ancient Greek, and Biblical Hebrew) at varying levels (beginner to advanced, secondary school to academic level).

My expertise as a linguist and my specialisation in historical linguistics, bestows me with a thorough understanding of the underlying structures and the historical developments of any particular language. This puts me in the privileged position to master any (Indo-European) language in minimal time, and grants me all the prerequisites to make them understandable to others. This, then, is what I want to offer to students, and what sets my lessons out from the others: as a historical linguist with knowledge of a wide variety of languages, I can not just teach you the language as it is by matter of fact, but also to understand the language from the inside out so as to make the irregular regular, and the illogical logical.

The contents of the lessons can vary widely depending on the level and the specific aim of the student (private tutoring, preparation for school exams, guidance to self-study, &c.). Depending on the student's profile (secondary school, university, spare-time autodidact) and specific needs or difficulties, we will fill in the lessons with materials provided by school and/or additional materials I will provide. The goals of the lessons will be to understand the language's underlying structures and the internal logic behind its irregularities, and to feel comfortable as a speaker.

I studied linguistics and philosophy with Franciscus at Leiden University in the Netherlands, and he was one of the most impressive students there. In linguistics, he specialised in historical and Indo-European linguistics. In philosophy, he focused on ancient and medieval thought. His grasp of both Latin and Greek was outstanding - he didn’t just read classical texts, but engaged with them fluently, and could even write full philosophy essays in Latin.
After Leiden, he continued his academic journey at KU Leuven in Belgium in theology and classics, which speaks to his dedication to the field. Franciscus combines depth, precision, and genuine passion in a way that is rare. He’s serious, thoughtful, and genuinely passionate about classical languages. I wholeheartedly recommend him to anyone looking for a serious, inspiring, and highly knowledgeable Latin teacher.

Franciscus has a keen analytical mind and an ability to apply it to language(s) - for which he also has a great natural talent. I met Franciscus while we were both students of linguistics at Leiden University, where we attended spoken Latin circles to flesh out our knowledge of the grammar and vocab already garnered in secondary school and university courses. Perhaps more importantly, Franciscus is an exceptionally sociable person, with an ability to find fast friends wherever his many travels take him. You can be sure of an engaging, charming, multifaceted and highly knowledgable teacher in picking him!
