About James

Having served as Senior Music Editor for the world's most popular magazine for decades, I have extensive experience creating and editing instructional articles, sheet music transcriptions and videos for guitarists, with the goal of presenting instructional content that is widely appealing, clear, informative and inspiring to players of various styles and skill levels.

As a working guitarist who has played thousands of gigs with wedding bands, rock bands, jazz trios and as a solo performer playing cover songs in restaurants, taverns, wineries, etc., I have acquired a great deal of guitar playing and musical wisdom, which I enjoy imparting to my students, using written materials where applicable, coupled with clear explanations and competent demonstrations.

About the lesson

Hello! This is Jimmy Brown, former longtime Senior Music Editor of Guitar World magazine, a position I held with honor and distinction for 37 years.

I'm an experienced, college-educated guitar teacher, writer and editor who has authored hundreds of lesson articles for the magazine over the years and produced many lesson videos for DVDs and online publication. I was also in charge of critically editing and proofreading all the note-for-note tablature transcriptions and lesson articles submitted by other contributors that have appeared in the magazine, to ensure a high degree of quality, accuracy, clarity and reader-friendliness.

I'm also a seasoned live performer, well-versed in many popular musical styles, including rock, blues, jazz, country and R&B. I know what works in the real world of playing guitar onstage and in a recording studio.

I'm happy to teach students of all levels and ages and help them pursue their own unique guitar playing interests and goals, whether it's learning beginner to advanced rhythm and lead playing techniques, improvisation, music theory, or just learning how to play their favorite songs for enjoyment.

You'll find me to be warm, friendly, well-spoken and patient.
