My teaching philosophy is simple: Education should be learner and learning-centered. My outlook on education stems from personal experience. I took my first tertiary course at Brevard Community College the summer before I entered the University of Central Florida. In terms of instructional vs. learning-centered academia, my experiences determined that my personal successes were not dependent on the type of institution. Rather, my personal successes were dependent on the professor’s ability to support my learning styles and personalize the learning process.

Medical school challenged my learning abilities with such incredible intensity that I contemplated dropping out. My first year, I was paying to teach myself. I was wasting precious learning and study time, sitting there listening to a PhD boast about his research, foregoing the subject of the course. For the first time in my academic career, I skipped class so that I COULD learn…and I was paying a TON of money to learn on my own! To avoid failure, I sought academic/psychological counseling. I grew to appreciate my “learning styles”, “multiple intelligences”, strengths, and learning weaknesses. Once I started to personalize my learning, I began to succeed.

Regardless of what I teach, I commence the course by getting to know my students and getting them to know themselves. I post one of my favorite quotes by Socrates on the board: “Know thyself.” My students engage in learning styles, multiple intelligence, study skills, test-taking, personality and career tests so that we can identify strengths, interests, and areas to improve. With these assessment tests, I get accurate data on my students and their needs. Thus, I teach to all learning styles and intelligences, differentiating the learning experience. One size does not fit all.

“Whole-brain” learning is crucial to the learning process. Arts and activities combined with analytical thinking engage more of the brain. This proves to have a profound effect of learning and retention. Therefore, I always integrate movement and creative projects into my lesson plans.
