About Piriam

I’m an Ontario Certified Teacher (OCT) with a specialization in Language and Literacy, and have over 20 years of experience helping students become strong, confident communicators. I hold a degree in English and a Masters of Science in Education, and I’ve dedicated my career to supporting students in developing essential reading and writing skills. Teaching is more than just a profession for me. It’s a true passion. Over the years, I’ve been deeply touched by the heartfelt notes, thoughtful gifts, and messages from former students who have reached out to share the lasting impact I’ve had on their lives. Their kind words and successes are constant reminders of why I do what I do. In addition to teaching, I am also a published author of 2 children’s picture books, with a third currently in progress. My love of language and reading fuels everything I do, and I bring that enthusiasm into every tutoring session. I’m sincere, patient, and fully committed to helping each student reach their full potential. Whether your child needs support, confidence, or challenge, I’m here to provide expert guidance with heart.

As an experienced and OCT-certified teacher with over 20 years of classroom and tutoring experience, I specialize in helping students become stronger, more confident writers. I focus on teaching how to write clearly, concisely, and effectively across a variety of school assignments, including personal narratives, opinion pieces, reports, and essays.

My lessons are tailored to meet the individual needs of each student. I use a practical and supportive approach that includes:

* Clear explanations and models
* Step-by-step guidance through the writing process
* Plenty of opportunities for practice
* Help with editing and revising to improve clarity, structure, and grammar

Students learn how to plan, organize, and express their ideas with purpose and confidence. I also help build vocabulary, sentence variety, and critical thinking skills, all while making writing feel manageable and even enjoyable.

Whether the need is to improve basic writing skills or to sharpen academic writing, I provide personalized support to help students succeed in school and beyond.

  • 1) When and why did you develop an interest in your chosen field?

As a child, I was naturally drawn to teaching. I remember spending hours with my best friend Christine, playing “teacher and student” with chalkboards, imaginary classrooms, and made-up assignments. I loved the idea of helping someone learn and the sense of leadership and creativity that came with it. Even in those early years, I felt a strong connection to the role of a teacher and it always felt like the right fit for me.

By the time I started high school, I knew for certain that I wanted to become a teacher. That early spark had grown into a clear purpose. I found myself inspired by my own teachers and fascinated by how they made learning engaging and meaningful. As I pursued my education and later entered the profession, my passion only deepened. Now, with 26 years of experience behind me, I still feel the same excitement and commitment I did as a young girl standing in front of a chalkboard, pretending to teach.
  • 2) What makes you passionate about your subject?

What makes me passionate about teaching is the knowledge that I’m making a real difference in a child’s life. Over the years, I’ve received countless heartfelt messages and feedback from students and parents, sharing how I’ve helped shape a child’s thinking, build their confidence, or simply make them feel seen and valued. These moments are deeply meaningful to me. They remind me that education isn’t just about academics, but instead about nurturing the whole child and helping them believe in themselves.

Knowing that I’ve had a hand in a student’s growth by encouraging them to take risks in their learning, guiding them through challenges, or helping them discover their own strengths, is what fuels my passion every day. It’s incredibly rewarding to witness that transformation, especially when a student begins to see their own potential. Those connections, that impact, and the chance to help someone find their voice are what keep me committed to this profession year after year.
  • 3) What do you like about tutoring? What makes you a "Superprof"?

What I enjoy most about tutoring is the one-on-one connection it allows. It’s incredibly rewarding to tailor each lesson to a student’s individual needs, learning style, and pace. In this setting, I can focus entirely on the learner. Some may need extra support, a boost in confidence, or a challenge to extend their thinking. The personalized nature of tutoring often leads to strong rapport, and that trust helps students open up, take risks, and make meaningful progress.

What makes me a “Superprof” is my ability to adapt, connect, and bring over 26 years of teaching experience into every session. I know how to create a safe, encouraging space where students feel comfortable asking questions and exploring their potential. I take pride in celebrating small wins, helping students overcome obstacles, and watching them grow, not just academically, but in their self-belief. Tutoring gives me the chance to make those one-on-one moments count, and I approach each session with care, patience, and a genuine passion for helping students succeed.
  • 4) Do you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you? Please explain.

Yes, I’ve been fortunate to have several teachers who truly inspired me. Interestingly, they weren’t the “easy” ones but they were the ones who challenged me. These teachers had high expectations and pushed me to do better, but they also provided constructive, meaningful feedback that helped me grow. They encouraged effort, celebrated progress, and believed in their students' potential, even when we didn’t see it ourselves.

What stood out most was their ability to balance structure with kindness. They managed their classrooms with firmness and respect, creating an environment where learning could truly happen. That balance left a lasting impression on me, and it’s something I try to model in my own teaching. Like them, I aim to hold my students to high standards while offering the guidance, encouragement, and respect they need to succeed.
  • 5) What are your keys to success?

One of my keys to success as a teacher is making sure every student feels valued and respected. I understand that academics come easily to some students, but can be a real challenge for others. School isn’t always easy, and it’s important to recognize that each learner’s journey is different. I encourage my students to keep trying their best, reminding them that there is a path for everyone. With patience and perseverance, every student can discover their unique strengths and talents.

I am deeply committed to helping students build confidence in themselves. I believe in the work I do as a teacher, and I hope that passion and sincerity come through in every lesson. When students feel supported and truly believe in their own abilities, they’re more willing to take risks and grow. My goal is always to inspire that confidence and help students realize that they have what it takes to succeed.
