About Whitney

Whitney has taught classroom Latin (grades 6-12), multiple philosophy courses, and tutored in Ancient Greek. She has worked with over 300 students and is proud to share that many of her AP Latin test prep students have earned college credit. Not only does she have a BA in both philosophy and classical languages and literature from Agnes Scott College, but she also holds an MA in philosophy from Florida State University. Outside of education, she has also worked as a paralegal. Whitney has been tutoring since high school, and loves "helping students understand subjects and grow passionate about the topic." Her approach is carefully paced and tailored to each student's needs. Regarding topics in Latin, Whitney draws upon her strong background in diagramming sentences; she realizes that most students don’t have this background. "While I don’t overwhelm the student with learning to diagram a sentence, I find it helps if we can make a 'picture' of the sentence in their head," she explains. "Learning Latin grammar really cements and solidifies a student’s comprehension of English," she notes. "This also helps with English writing!" She's sensitive to the needs of each student so that they can build new skills and harness the confidence to apply them in different ways. Whitney has many accolades from her years as a student. She received two scholarships from Agnes Scott for three consecutive years: the Letitia Pate Evans Scholarship and a study abroad scholarship. On top of winning the American Academy of Poets College Award her senior year, she also won a contest to teach in Greece! Her teaching skills also earned her a teaching award in graduate school. In high school, she participated in cross country and track, dance (ballet and jazz), and cheerleading. In her free time, she enjoys reading, writing, hiking, gardening, and cooking.
