About Jered
I'm a guitarist, bassist, and music educator who has spent 25+ years deep in the world of heavy music. I hold a BA in Music from the University of Wisconsin and have been teaching privately for years, helping students at all levels develop real skills on the instrument.
Outside of teaching, I run Beholden to the Riff, a heavy music bass education channel focused on doom, sludge, stoner rock, post-metal, and psychedelic rock. It's a project born out of a genuine passion for these genres and a belief that heavy bass playing deserves dedicated, serious instruction.
I teach because I love watching students connect with music that actually moves them. Whether you're picking up the bass or guitar for the first time or looking to level up your playing in a specific style, I bring the same enthusiasm and depth to every lesson that I bring to my own playing.

My lessons are 60 minutes and run via Zoom, making it easy to learn from anywhere. I teach guitar and bass with a focus on rock and metal, covering everything from foundational technique and music theory to learning the songs and styles that actually excite you.
With a BA in Music from the University of Wisconsin and 25+ years of playing and teaching experience, I bring a structured but flexible approach to every lesson. We start with the fundamentals that make you a stronger player, then build toward your personal goals, whether that's nailing a specific riff, developing your own tone, or understanding how great heavy music is constructed.
Lessons are open to all levels, from complete beginners picking up the instrument for the first time to advanced players looking to push further. Every session is tailored to where you are and where you want to go.

I've been a student of Jered's for over two years, and over that time, my playing, music theory knowledge, and understanding of how to match tones have grown exponentially. Before working with Jered, I wasn't sure how to troubleshoot things I struggled with. He provides a great framework to identify the issue and make corrections.
Jered has a great ability to explain things in a way that clicks when it was something I struggled to understand before.
A lot of what we worked on was figuring out the notation/tabs of songs, and I've improved a lot. Not just developing the ear for it, but the logic as well.
I highly recommend Jered as an instructor, whether that is 1-on-1 lessons or group/cohort courses.Where do I begin? I met Jered many moons ago after discovering his YouTube channel and reaching out to him. That connection turned into a very valuable friendship, as well as an incredible learning experience with him as my bass teacher.
He is patient, humble, and always respectful. I’ve never once felt inferior or hesitant to ask even the simplest questions. He has a great ability to explain concepts in a way that matches your skill level at any given time.
Over the years, I feel like we’ve connected on many levels beyond just Black Sabbath inspired bass riffs.
If you’re thinking about taking lessons, I’d say it’s truly an investment in your musical journey and absolutely worth it. He will make you a better player by working with your strengths while helping you improve your weaknesses, always encouraging you to progress at your own pace.
On top of that, he’s one of the coolest people I’ve had the chance to get to know online. He’s deeply knowledgeable about underground music, all the best dirt pedals, and how to achieve the bass or guitar tone you hear in your head.
Don’t hesitate to invest, it will pay off. Plus, you’ll get to know a genuinely great person. Nothing but respect, thank you Jered.
