About Mia
I am a final-year Law student at Trinity College Dublin, and have always had a real interest in English, literature and writing. I read widely myself and particularly enjoy discussing a text, drawing out different interpretations and considering what the writer is trying to convey.
My law degree has strengthened this considerably. Much of my work involves reading complex material, drawing inferences from it and developing a well-supported argument. I think this lends itself naturally to English, particularly when helping a student move beyond simply knowing a text to being able to form and express their own response to it.
I understand that English can sometimes feel quite subjective, particularly when you are unsure what an examiner is looking for or feel that you are not seeing what you are “supposed” to see in a poem or text. I hope to make that process much clearer and to give students the confidence to trust their own ideas, while learning how to develop and support them effectively.
I am friendly, patient and genuinely enjoy helping people work through something until it clicks. Whether you are working towards a H1, hoping to move up a grade, or simply need more guidance and structure than you are currently getting in class, I would be very happy to help you work towards your goals.

My approach to English is centred on helping students learn how to really read and respond to a text for themselves, while always keeping the Leaving Certificate exam in mind. With poetry in particular, it can be difficult to know what you are supposed to “see” or say. I will work through poems and texts with you closely, helping you recognise themes, language, imagery and ideas and, most importantly, helping you establish your own thoughts about what you have read.
I also know that sometimes the hardest part is simply sitting down and getting through a book. If that is something you struggle with, we can read the text together. We might work through a chapter or two during a lesson and then discuss what has happened, what stood out, what the writer is doing and, importantly, what we can take from it into an exam answer. This can make reading feel much less daunting while helping you genuinely understand and remember the text.
From there, we will turn your ideas into strong, exam-ready writing. I want you to leave lessons with things you can actually bring into the exam: memorable sentences and phrases, quotations you understand rather than simply learn off, clear essay structures, and ideas that you know how to adapt when the wording of a question changes.
I can also help with creative and personal writing, developing your ideas and finding a writing style that feels like your own while still understanding what earns marks in the Leaving Certificate.
I do not believe every student has to connect with exactly the same texts or writers. I will always work within the Leaving Certificate prescribed material, but the prescribed lists offer plenty to explore. If the poetry or texts you are studying in class are not clicking with you, we can look at other prescribed options and find material you genuinely respond to. I will then guide you through it with the exam firmly in mind, so that exploring something you enjoy also becomes something you can confidently write about for marks.
We can also work through your own essays, past examination questions and unseen material together. Ultimately, I want to make you less dependent on learned-off answers, not more. My goal is to give you a way of approaching English that you understand, can remember and can confidently use when you are sitting the Leaving Certificate exam on your own.
