Ballet Lessons in Gainesville, Florida

Ballet has been around for centuries as it originated in the Italian Renaissance when it was developed as a form of court entertainment. It wasn’t until the 15th and 16th centuries that the dance technique became formalized, and then became popular in France. An art form that has come to be loved due to the beauty of a dancer’s body and its so-called liquid movements along with the music, choreography, costumes, and sets. One of the most popular ballets of all time is the Nutcracker, which doubles as a Christmas tale. It premiered on December 1892 at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg with the choreography of Lev Ivanov, and since then has had a ton of success.

That being said, ballet portrays the gracefulness and rhythm that ballerinas have. Anna Pavlova is one of the world’s greatest ballerinas although she didn’t exactly fit the mold of the perfect ballerina, she was still named Prima Ballerina in 1906 after a performance of Giselle. She is an icon in the dance world that proves to society that you don’t have to necessarily look a certain way to become the best, as long as you believe in yourself. And if there’s one thing you’ll learn while learning to dance ballet is confidence, an invaluable life lesson that will change your life!

The Six Main Styles of Ballet

The six methods of ballet are the French School, the Vaganova Method, the Cecchetti Method, the Bournonville method, the Royal Academy of Dance method, and the Balanchine method.

  • French School: A ballet training that is known for being clean and sophisticated, which focuses on elegance and graceful movements.
  • Vaganova Method: A ballet training that influences by Russian dancers mixing both the French ballet technique and that of the Italian Cecchetti method. Dominating Russian ballet to this day!
  • Cecchetti Method: A ballet training that emphasizes regimen, elasticity, strength, and a true mastery of ballet technique and history.
  • Bournonville Method: A ballet technique that uses expressive mime and effortlessness accompanied by a quiet upper body with buoyant jumps and fleet footwork.
  • Royal Academy of Dance Method: A ballet training that is influenced by the Italian, French, Danish, and Russian methods creating a new style that is unique and is recognized as the English style.
  • Balanchine Method: A ballet training that focuses on very quick movements coupled with more open use of the upper body, which is used in the New York City Ballet.

The Strict Rules of Ballet

Ballet can be one of the most demanding forms of dance, but one of the most rewarding as well. And a big reason why ballet tends to be so strict is that it lays the foundation for all other dance forms in western dance. Being skilled in ballet will enhance your technique in all other styles of dance due to its emphasis on form and discipline. It requires a lot of rigorous training and comes with a lot of strict rules, dancers are even expected to wear certain hairstyles and clothes during practice. This is where most dancers learn and perfect their technique preventing dancers from getting any injuries or having a slow recovery time.

So the more ballet one practices the better your coordination and awareness of your body will be thus improving the quality of your movements. In order to become a great dancer you need to have the versatility and the skills to have a strong stage presence in both theatre and music. Although the level of strictness of your ballet class will vary, the more you practice and improve, then the stricter the rules will get. However, it will be an experience of a lifetime that will bring out your most passionate self!

The Four Types of Ballet

The four types of ballet are known as Romantic, Classical, Neoclassical, and Contemporary. Romantic takes place from the early to mid-1800s and is the era in which pointe work emerged. And the plots for the performances revolved around supernatural women such as spirits, fairies, and ghosts, while still emphasizing a soft and delicate aesthetic.

Classical takes place from the mid to late 1800s and further improved the pointe shoe while classical tutus were shortened to show the new footwork that was developed. Neoclassical started in the early to mid-1900s with the first ballet of this style Apollo, taking a more minimal approach. These ballets are usually abstract and have no clear plot, costumes, or scenery, just focusing on the dancing. Lastly, the contemporary style of ballet was choreographed in the mid-1990s to the present, in which dancers move bigger and faster.  Floorwork is often incorporated and dancing barefoot can also be used although pointe shoes can still be used. Overall, ballet is a beautiful form of art that helps one find their center of balance, strength, and grace!
